Wimbledon

Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tournament in the world.  Since 1877, this tournament has been held at the All England Club in the London suburb of Wimbledon.  It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, and the only one still played on the game's original surface...grass (wimbledon). This two week tournament in late June culminates with the men's and womens singles final event.  This event is scheduled for the second Saturday and Sunday of the tournament..

During the calendar year, two other grand slam events precede the Wimbledon tournament...the hard court Australian Open and clay court French Open with the the hard court US Open  to follow.
Wimbledon traditions include drinking Pimms spritzers, royal patronge, the eating of strawberries and cream, and a strict dress code for competitors. In 2009, Wimbledon's Centre Court was fitted with a retractable roof to insure against the possibility of rain delays interrupting Centre Court matches during the tournament.
