Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympic Games is held every fourth year at a city determined by the Olympic Committee.  It is a multi-sporting event on snow or ice with Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, bobsledding and ice hockey. Cross-country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, Nordic combined, ski jumping, and speed skating have been competed at every Winter Olympics since 1924.  Since then, other events were added to include:  the luge, short track speed skating, and freestyle skiing have earned a permanent spot on the Olympic program. Others events such as, speed skiing, bandy, and skijöring have been demonstration sports but never fully incorporated officially as an Olympic sport.

The first Winter Olympics games were held in Chamonix, France in 1924.  Games were held every four years from 1924 through 1940, then were ended due to World War II.  The games resumed in 1948 as both the Winter and Summer Olympics occured in the same year until 1992.  Then the games split every two years between Summer and Winter Olympics.
