A Little About the Athletics
Unfortunately for the Athletics, they had a repeat of their 2007 season by placing 3rd in the AL West in 2008. To try and fill in the gaps in their weak offense, the Athletics brought on left fielder Matt Holliday and returning player Jason Giambi who had played for the team from 1995 to 2001 but then left to join the Yankees. The team had also recently acquired Russ Springer who will be invaluable in teaching the young pitching rotation of Gio Gonzalez, Dana Eveland, Dallas Braden, Justin Duchscherer, and Sean Gallagher, who have yet to reach their potential. Another factor counting on the success of the Athletics is if Eric Chavez can manage to stay healthy. If all goes right, the Oakland Athletics have a good chance of making it to the playoffs and possibly further so make sure you get your tickets to the Oakland-Alameda Country Coliseum and watch as the Athletics take on the 2009 season.
In the Beginning
In 1901, the Oakland Athletics were born as the Philadelphia Athletics and with them brought a force that wouldn't soon be forgotten. Coonie Mack, owner and manager of the team until 1950 helped lead the team to 6 AL Pennants and 3 World Series from 1901 to 1914. Before 1955 when the club moved to Kansas City, the team claimed 2 more World Series titles with the help of hitter Jimmie Fox and pitcher Lefty Grove.
