NBA ALLSTAR GAME

The National Basketball Assocication played the inaugural All-Star Game in the Boston Garden on March 2, 1951.  That game pitted the best players from the Western Conference against the best from the Eastern Conference.
NBA Allstar Game Players are chosen from ballots from fans and the reserves are chosen by the coaches.  The only caveat is a Coach can not vote for his team players.  Coaches are identified as the Coach with best record in each respective conference.  However, coaches can not coach the team on consecutive years as this is called the "Riley Rule".  The rule was used since the Lakers had the best record for 9 straight seasons from 1982 to 1990.
